What is Glossier?
Glossier is a beauty brand that launched in the US back in 2014, and at long last (to many beauty fanatics’ delight!) the New York-based brand has started shipping to the UK, as of October 9 2017. The brand was born on social media and has gained thousands of fans thanks to its tasteful aesthetic, impressive Instagram strategy and millennial-friendly branding as well as an exceptional range of products.
According to Glamour Magazine: “Glossier is all about stripping things back, with the brand having become world-famous for the huge focus they put on low-maintenance, dewy and lit-from-within skin using just a handful of products from intensely hydrating moisturisers through to glow-giving oils and swipable highlighters . In a world full of heavy contours and pomade-caked brows this is seriously refreshing stuff.”
One of the reasons the brand is so popular worldwide is because it’s whole concept is based around natural beauty. It centres around low maintenance principles of beauty, makeup and skincare. I love this because it’s all about highlighting your existing features, and recognising that the exact thing that makes each person beautiful is their individualities and differences. The collection by Glossier consists of amazing hydrators, glow enhancing oils and the creamiest of highlighters. Celebrities are also falling in love with the brand. Gorgeous women including Chrissy Teigen and Reese Witherspoon, all wore the complexion perfecting Cloud Paint cream blusher to the Oscars.
Who is the founder?
For those who don’t know, cult beauty brand Glossier was founded by Emily Weiss, the brains behind the brilliant ‘Into The Gloss‘, insanely popular beauty blog. Many people may ask, why is this seemingly small and fairly new brand being given so much coverage?
“It’s all down to its founder and CEO. Emily Weiss has a successful beauty blog, Into The Gloss, which she started in 2010 – and coming fresh from a glamorous position at Vogue, she quickly built up a loyal base of fans. With a refreshingly candid take on beauty, she began picking up credibility, and secured interviews with big names like Kim Kardashian and Karlie Kloss because of it.” “Turning those fans into paying customers was the next natural step – so Glossier was born. With Weiss’ extensive knowledge of the industry, savvy business mind and an army of fans behind her, she did what every blogger dreamed of, and turned her website into a successful business. And she was clever about it. She didn’t just create a line of products to mimic another brand’s – she kept the collection small, fresh-looking and fun, and made sure everything served a purpose. Nothing gets lost.”
All products in the collection have clean, aesthetically pleasing packaging making them a blogger/influencer’s dream. Obviously Emily used her knowledge as a former blogger (not really former, as Into The Gloss is still alive and thriving), to create products that people couldn’t help but want to share online. This natural sharability of the products helped the brand to grow and become the word on everybody’s perfectly-glossed lips.
A breakdown of some the 23 products…
The range actually only has 23 products in total, which is crazy when you think some brands have this many foundation shades alone. Here are some of the hero products from Glossier worth adding to your beauty cabinet…
Perfecting Skin Tint – £15
If you want to give your skin a break from foundation but still want something to perk up your complexion, this breathable skin tint is the answer. It provides a sheer wash of even and natural-looking colour while brightening and lifting the skin. It won’t cover up marks or redness, but will even out discolouration and create a smooth and toned appearance. Great for all skin types.
“In the land between bare skin and makeup makeup exists the imperceptible wash of color that is our Perfecting Skin Tint. What does it do? Evens out discoloration and leaves your face looking toned, smooth, and dewy. The breathable, ultra thin formula auto-fits to skin, making application as simple as throwing on moisturizer. What won’t it do? Hide your freckles, spackle your pores, or erase any other evidence that you are, in fact, a real human being.” – Glossier website
The Lip Gloss – £14
“We took everything you love about lip gloss, got rid of everything you don’t, and formulated the perfect Lip Gloss. Our formula gives lips one thing: cushiony, crystal clear shine—no gluey feeling, no stickiness, no grittiness, no glitter. The fuzzy doe-foot applicator glides on a delightfully lightweight layer for a comfortable, glassy finish that won’t disappear after an hour (oooh yeeeah). And because it’s Glossier, your lips stay soft and hydrated thanks to moisturizing Vitamin E. Shine on, friend.” – Glossier website
Balm Dotcom – £10
“This multi-tasking lip and skin salve will become your best friend in the bitter winter months. It’s formula features a cocktail of protective antioxidants and natural emollients that help repair dry skin. Offering lasting hydration and a dewy finish, it comes in a range of fun flavours – including coconut and cherry – that each have a dreamy scent.”
Milky Jelly Cleanser – £15
“One of Glossier’s most talked about products, this creamy and conditioning gel formula can be used as either a daily face wash or makeup remover. Its mild ingredients include an agent used in contact lens solution, leaving skin thoroughly cleansed and baby-soft. Massage on to wet or dry skin and rinse off.”
Stretch Concealer – £15
“Some concealers can be too drying, making skin look cakey and dark circles more pronounced. A buildable formula that ‘lets skin look like skin’, Glossier’s Stretch Concealer is created with elastic micro waxes that can move with your face – so you won’t have to fret about it caking up throughout the day. Other ingredients like jojoba oil mean that skin is left dewy and nourished. Use it to cover all types of skin woes from breakouts to dark under eyes.”
Cloud Paint – £15
“With Cloud Paint, we set out to make blush the high point of your routine. The pillowy, gel-cream formula is designed to be the most user-friendly cheek color in existence. If you can finger paint, you can Cloud Paint—simply dab it onto cheeks wherever you please. It’s seamless, sheer, and buildable (i.e. it’s hard to accidentally apply too much). Inspired by gradient pink NYC sunsets, the shades are optimized to work across a wide range of skin tones for a healthy, flushed-from-within glow.”
Boy Brow – £14
Another cult favourite, Boy Brow is a hair pomade designed to thicken, fill and groom your brows. The tiny brush applicator lets you fix sparse hairs into place without applying too much product. Unlike some brow products, it doesn’t leave a stiff feeling or flake off. As well as three different coloured options, there’s also a clear version that offers the same conditioning benefits but without pigment.
The Haloscope – £16
“Haloscope, the galaxy’s first dew effect highlighter. It’s a dual-delivery formula: the outer halo is infused with genuine crystal extracts for all-day enlightenment, with a solid oil core of vitamin-rich moisturizers for a hydrated, dewy finish. Expect an otherworldly sheen that’s never dry, never glittery.”
Priming Moisturiser – £18
“Priming” means that it instantly brings out the best in your skin, so you have a fresh, glowing canvas that’s ready for makeup (but looks so good you might want to wear less). The ideal base for Perfecting Skin Tint, it visibly plumps skin up with moisture to create cushiony bounce and an even texture, which helps minimize the appearance of pores—minus any heavy blurring ingredients. The anti-redness complex soothes and evens skin tone, leaving a clean, dewy, balanced finish. This comforting cream allows you to layer and build up to the perfect amount of moisture depending on climate, season, or how your skin’s feeling on any given day.
Brand new fragrance: Glossier You
“You’ll find that You makes a good first impression, and lives up to it as time goes on. Each note was chosen and balanced to allow the juice to be both long-lasting and true to how it smells at the beginning, without changing as it dries down. In other words, it’s heavy on the base notes. Mostly it smells like you: that familiar human-y note that makes up the body of what you’re smelling. Creamy, sparkling, clean, warm. That’s You. *please be advised that the formula comes incomplete; You are the first ingredient*”
